Content Brief

In the context of this course the use of a content brief is to align with exposure to professional practice.
In the writing industry writers may work as freelance writers or they may work on commission and as such are required to meet submission guidelines and submission briefs, as well as creating proposals or writing pitches to have a chance at publication. Part of this, requires meeting the specification set by the publishing house which covers everything from word count to formatting to genre and form. Many writers also submit work to competitions. In doing all of these writer’s need to understand the submission and publication requirements.
A content brief is a set of guidelines, requirements, and up-front information provided to guide the writer.
A content brief outlines the type of content, the audience, and the purpose. Professionally, content briefs guide the scope of the writing, work to ensure efficiency in the writing process, ensure inclusion of critical information and messaging, increase consistency through a standardised approach and provide clear direction, objectives and timeframes.
A content brief in the context of this course is developed by the provider to simulate professional practice.
Content briefs designed by providers will align with professional publishing and formatting guidelines – See submission guidelines in this glossary.
Learners will be provided with a content brief which outlines specifications, considerations, and constraints necessary to guide learners as writers as they create texts.
Some work requirements in this course specify the use of a content brief, however providers can also use develop additional content briefs or involve learners in the design.

What Are The Different Types Of Editing?
- Developmental editing: checks concept, plot coherence, and character development/arc.
- Structural editing: identifies issues with plot, pacing, characters, settings, themes, writing style.
- Line editing: looks at details line-by-line.
- Copyediting: is much as above, except with less attention to line-by-line correction of clumsy writing.
- Proof reading: looks for simple typos or errors in the text.’

Industry submission standard refers to Standard Manuscript Format (SMF).
There are specific industry standards that authors practice to format their manuscripts.
Learners in this level 2 course develop an understanding of SMF, as they learn to apply formatting guidelines relevant to the text type as identified by the provider and in line with work requirement specifications.
SMF rules may vary for different types of texts. For example, there are points of difference in formatting a poem or a short story or a novel. Each publisher’s submission guidelines vary.
While each publisher will have different requirements there are basic guidelines which apply to the:
- Title page, use of indent, spacing and standard font.
- 300-word synopsis
- 50-word author bio written in third person.

Logline synopsis
|
‘A logline is a one-sentence summary or description of a movie. Loglines distil the important elements of your screenplay—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into reading the entire script.’ (Sorkin, A., Master Class Online, 2022)
This promotional or marketing text can also be crafted for a stage play.
‘A logline synopsis will take no longer than 15 seconds to say. A logline often contains the scenario (and inciting incident that sets a story in motion), the dramatic action (what the characters are compelled to do) and the consequences of failure (the stakes of the story).
For example, the Logline for political thriller series, Secret City:
“Beneath the placid facade of Canberra, amidst rising tension between China and America, senior political journalist Harriet Dunkley uncovers a secret city of interlocked conspiracies, putting innocent lives in danger including her own.”
The example above identifies; a place and its particular quality (Canberra’s placid facade); a main character and something about them (a senior female journalist); tension (China vs America), an inciting incident (uncovering a secret), the dramatic action (reveal a conspiracy), and the stakes (innocent lives).’Screen Australia Story Documents Drama 2018.

Freelance writers use market research to sell their work. To do this, writers must understand who their readers are and what they want.
They do this by researching and using sources of market information from best -selling titles, book titles and covers, book reviews, book competitions, author websites, general research about particular target markets.

Is a short description which accompanies a piece of creative work, designed to create interest. Its purpose is to work as a sales pitch to advertise and sell the accompanying creative work.
Marketing blurbs generally comprise:
- a short paragraph introducing the author
- a short description (not a synopsis)
- your proposed story angle
- a conclusion summarising the key points of your pitch and your contact details.
Marketing blurbs are typically between 100 – 200 words in length.

- The mock writer’s website replicates the professional practice of writers and aligns to the professional studies focus area to which this course is aligned.
- The mock writer’s website is regarded as a persuasive text type using language features, structures and conventions for promotional purposes.
The mock writer’s website is a mock version of a published writer’s promotional website which replicates the content, architecture and design of an authentic website.
The mock version can be crafted utilising applications or software familiar to the learner, including any of the Microsoft Office suite of programs.

Narrative techniques
|
Narrative literary techniques are also known as literary devices. Literary devices are used in texts to connect with the reader and convey meaning.
In narrative texts, composers might use literary devices such as personification, similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and imagery to engage the reader and allow them to visualise the setting and characters.
In a persuasive text, composers might use persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, repetition, metaphors, hyperbole and modality to persuade readers to agree with a particular point of view.

One paragraph synopsis
|
The One-Para Synopsis extends on a ‘Logline synopsis’ to give more specifics of who, what, and how, whilst still being short and to the point. Where the ‘Logline synopsis’ can be somewhat a tease, the one-para synopsis needs to embody some specific detail.
Like the ‘Logline synopsis’ the ‘One-Para’ can vary greatly in expression depending on whether it is for a feature, episodic, or an interactive project, but there are general rules of thumb to help shape them:
- in principle the One-Para should encompass:
- Genre and theme (how it feels and what it’s really about)
- the forces in opposition (conflict of who’s against who?)
- the goals and stakes of the drama and its characters, (what they want and what’s at risk)
- what sets the story in motion (the inciting incident and potential escalations)

Publicity
|
Publicity in publishing is gaining media coverage for an author. Typically, a publicist tries to acquire press coverage by communicating with representatives of media outlets such as television, radio, blog, newspaper, and magazine editors. The goal is to convince news outlets to interview the author, write a story that quotes the author or mentions the book, or review the book. You can't pay for publicity, so consumers tend to trust these stories more than advertising. However, there's no guarantee that the news media will run a story.

|
Examples of short text types are:
- short story
- beginning chapter/s of a novel, graphic or verse
- poetry
- illustrated story
- picture book
- flash fiction
- personal essay
- micro-stage or screenplays
- one act plays
- first scene or scenes of a stage play or screenplay, film, TV or radio
- short performance texts for example: slam and narrative poetry and comedy

Studio practice – writer’s workshop
|
Studio practice concerns the way in which a writer or an artist works. When engaging in studio practice: learners work independently and collaboratively.
A writer’s workshop is a method of writing instruction based on the work of Donald Graves and Donald Murray. As in a professional writer’s workshop each learner is a working author.
As in professional writing workshops, emphasis is placed on sharing work, conferencing and editing.

Stylistic features
|
The ways in which aspects of texts are arranged and how they affect meaning. Examples of stylistic features are lexical choice, syntax, narrative point of view, voice, structure, language patterns and language features, both written and visual. Style can distinguish the work of individuals, for example, Winton’s stories, Wright’s poems and Luhrmann’s films as well as the works of a particular period.

In this course learners will simulate the professional writing practice using formatting and publishing guidelines that learners need to follow to complete their work.
Providers will supply learners with publishing and formatting guidelines.
When submitting writing for publication, authors are often asked to use Standard Manuscript Format (SMF) – See glossary Industry Submission Standards.

Visual language
|
Visual language is the language of images. Shapes, colours, forms, lines, patterns, objects, people are examples of elements in images arranged to create a particular visual effect or to communicate certain thoughts, ideas, feelings, meanings and messages.

‘New play workshops are fun, exciting, often surprising, sometimes overwhelming. At their best, they can be a turning point on a play’s journey toward production. To prepare, know as much as you can about how your play functions on stage. Come to the workshop with your own strategy of inquiry. Understand that to do their job your collaborators in workshop will probably ask questions you haven’t considered—and that’s a good thing. Typically, your collaborators are more interested in discovering your play than judging it. You will probably gain more by embracing that spirit of discovery than resisting it. The more you can share your process with your collaborators, the more they can model your play for you. (Kinghorn b)

Writing as a process

In this course writing as a process involves three broad stages:
- prewriting, drafting and revising
- writing, rewriting, editing and publishing
- post writing – writing is distributed to audiences and the writer reflects on the process.

Writing visually
|
‘Visual screenwriting is the process of using words and specific detail to communicate a script in a way that the reader can see the entire film.
There are four places in a screen play where visual writing can be used:
- Location descriptions
- Scene descriptions
- Character descriptions
- Character action.
Visual writing focuses on two senses: things that can be seen and something that can be heard.’
‘Visual writing works to:
Construct dramatic action so that the reader visualizes the character's experience. This includes the set, symbols, the motif, and the set as character.
Construct dramatic action so that the producer and director can easily translate the story to screen.
Project dramatic action primarily from the experience of the character, and secondarily from the writer. Doing it should begin from understanding what an actor does. It is not the writer telling the tale, it's the characters.
